ah! woof! some things will. you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news in high definition. police swarm into san francisco's neighborhood, closing streets and evacuating buildings in a search for a possible gunman. >> the recent events have really spurred something that i've been thinking about for a long time. >> and if you ask the dozens of bay area residents who handed in their guns today, a lot of them would tell you newtown, connecticut, was very much on their mind. in the extended forecast, we have a whole lot more rainy days than sunny days. we'll take a look at that forecast. good evening. i'm ann notarangelo. we begin with breaking news. a long police standoff on san

francisco's nob hill is over. it began in an apartment building at california and hyde. and as the situation developed, the entire area was swarming with heavily armed police officers. don knapp was there. don, what happened? >> reporter: ann, this police operation is just now wrapping up. it ended the way you wanted it to end. they had swat teams here, negotiators, which tells you the two ways it could have ended. but in the end, the suspect gave up peacefully. residents gathered outside their california street apartments as spectators looked on. practically this entire block of california between larkin and hyde was filled with just about every type of emergency vehicle. police officers could be seen climbing nearby rooftops. all of this, the result of what police say started as a domestic disturbance call. >> the neighbor called the san francisco police department, advised us of the situation, at which point our officers responded. they attempted to make contact,

during which time they believe that this person may have potentially had a weapon. >> reporter: police evacuated those who lived closest to the danger. and because there was concern the suspect may have a firearm, tactical units were called in. the incident started around 6:30 this morning with neighbors reports they heard screaming and yelling. one of those who heard the disturbance was resident nathan braun. >> there were a whole bunch of swat team in the hallway. they had a shelter in place and evacuated us about five minutes ago. >> reporter: sometime around 10 p.m., the suspect surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody. he is being interviewed by police. the woman who was with him was released unharmed. no shots were fired. investigators will stay on the scene, process it as a crime scene, and continue looking for a handgun. now, the suspect's troubles are not over. but the important thing is, he did not get shot and neither

did anyone else. reporting live in san francisco, don knapp, cbs 5. today investigators released the names of the victims in newtown, connecticut. and we should let you know the details are troubling. police say the gunman shot 20 children at least twice with a high-powered rifle, not handguns as was reported yesterday. he also killed six adults, several of whom tried to overpower him during the course of the attack. investigators say say he forced his way into the school by breaking a window. cbs 5 reporter bob has more on how the morning unfolded. >> reporter: it was a massacre. and most of the victims were first graders. autopsies on the bodies of the children revealed that many, if not all, had been shot multiple times. wayne carver is the chief medical examiner for connecticut. >> i only did seven of the autopsy. the victims i had ranged from three to eleven and i only saw two of them with close-range

shootings. >> reporter: investigators believe that most of the shootings came from an assault rifle. it was one of four guns adam lanza took from the home he shared with his mother after he shot and killed her. sources say he left one gun in his car, and then he forced his way into the school, carrying the assault rifle in his hands and two semiautomatic pistols in the dark military-style cargo pants he was wearing. inside the school, he zeroed in on two classrooms, killing 20 children and six adults. one of them was the school's principal, who sources say tried to stop the shooting by lunging at the gunman. the spree ended when lanza shot himself with one of the handguns. police have yet to find any journal or detailed notes lanza may have left behind explaining his horrific actions. the lieutenant said clues to the possible motive have been recovered in multiple searches. >> it produced a very good

evidence in this investigation that our investigators will be able to use in hopefully painting a complete picture as to how, and more importantly, why this occurred. >> one of the victims was six- year-old emily parker. her father talked about her this afternoon. >> she was the type of person that could just light up a room. she, uh, she always had something kind to say about anybody. and her -- her -- her love, and the strength that she gave us and the example that she showed is us is remarkable. she is an incredible person. and i'm so blessed to be her dad. >> and tonight, a vigil was held for 27-year-old victoria soto, the first grade teacher was shot while trying to shield her students from the gunman. her family said she lost her life doing what she loved.

and cbs news reporter michelle explains, she wasn't the only hero. >> reporter: the news that the six- and seven-year-olds had been shot multiple times further devastated an already prone community. sarah couldn't stop crying. >> they're just babies. you know, they're just babies. they shouldn't be taken away from their mothers an fathers. it's just awful. >> reporter: the children who survived were protected by their teachers. janet gathered her kindergartners in one coloneller. colonel -- in one corner. 18 years of teaching experience kicked in. >> we all got away from the windows, covered the windows, locked the classroom door. the children started to say at one point, i'm scared, and i said, i think we're going to be okay. i think somebody is on the roof making noises, trying to divert their attention. >> reporter: finally police told them it was safe to leave.

>> they said have everybody hold hands, come down the hallway, cover their eyes. so we did. as i'm going by the hallway, i, as the grown-up, i do spot blood on the floor so i know things aren't good. i don't know whether any of them saw that. we kept going, kept moving. >> reporter: victoria soto also taught kindergarten. jim wiltsie was her cousin. >> she just turned 27 years old. she loved the beach. she had a black lab named roxie. she loved her family. >> reporter: her father said she gathered her students into a classroom. she died protecting them. >> her instincts kicked in. whatever details transpired in that classroom, we know in our hearts that she was protecting

those kids from that shooter. >> the shooter's father, peter lanza, issued this statement, quote, our family is grieving along with all those who have been affected. he also said that relatives are in, quote, a state of disbelief and trying to figure out whatever answers we can. sandy hook elementary school now is on a roster of mass shootings. columbine, virginia tech, just to name a few. there are survivors who still cope with the aftermath and the news of the latest tragedy. >> not again. just sick to my stomach. it just takes me back to what we felt on april 20, '99, even though it will be 14 years. it's just emotionally -- anyone that was alive during that time or especially at columbine, it just takes us back to that horrific day that we had. >> it really hurts when babies are dying. i really hope that this

shooting is the turning point. we have the power to -- we need to learn how to accept each other, live with one another, get back to the basics of being a human being. this one just really, really, really hurts. >> i can't put it into words, how impossible it seems to me that this could happen again, so suddenly, so rapidly. it's disconcerting. again, there's enough controversy out there, that, you know, this is one of the things that i'm still upset enough about just hearing about connecticut, that i haven't even been able to come up with words. >> tomorrow, president obama will be in newtown to attend a memorial for the victims. but today he talked about the tragedy during his weekly address. >> this weekend, michelle and i are doing what i know every parent is doing. holding our children as close as we can and reminding them how much we love them.

there are families in connecticut who can't do that today. and they need all of us right now, because while nothing can take the place of a lost child or loved one, all of us can extend a hand to those in need, to remind them that we're there for them, that we're praying for them, and that the love they felt for those they lost endures, not just in their own memories, but also in their communities and in their country. >> in a moment, gun violence and gun buy-backs in the bay area. we'll also have the latest on the rain moving through our area. before the break, the names of the 27 women and children who lost their lives yesterday in newtown, connecticut.

the san rafael transit cent. police have identified the man wanted for shooting another at the san rafael transit center. 24-year-old ladrakeous sonny dean is considered armed and dangerous. he goes by the nicknames of drake and d. he's currently on parole for a home invasion robbery. police say a 22-year-old man was on platform d yesterday afternoon when dean shot him at close range. the victim was taken to the hospital where he's expected to survive. a grim coincidence in san francisco and oakland today. police in both cities held previously planned gun buybacks where gun owners exchange weapons for cash. the turnout was unprecedented. people began lining up four

hours before it began, the line stretching for blocks. everyone came to exchange their firearms $200 cash for each working gun. for a lot of people, connecticut was very much on their mind. >> it puts gun violence in a whole different perspective and makes everything real. >> get guns off the street to our grandkids can't get these and go out and kill somebody. >> just as cars were lining up for the buyback, gunfire hit four people a few blocks away at international and 85th in broad daylight at 7:30 a.m. also, a long line in san francisco today, a community group, to get the word out about the gun buyback program. so many people responded that they ran out of money and had to give out iou's. >> the recent events spurred something i've been thinking about for a long time. my family's personal destiny was really stolen by guns in

their lifetime, my grandmother and my grandfather. and i don't want my grandchildren to go through this. this is the easiest statement i could make, was to turn in these guns. >> police say they took in 300 guns in oakland and 125 in san francisco. they say there were still people in line when the buyback ended. they took their names and phone numbers and will contact them. for continuing coverage of this story, visit our website, cbssf.com. secretary of state hillary clinton is recovering at home after fainting, falling, hitting her head and suffering a concussion. clinton cancelled an overseas trip last week because she was ill with a stomach virus. the state department says she was dehydrated from the virus and fainted. she is being monitored by doctors and is working from home. because of her illness, she will not testify at congressional hearings on thursday about the september 11

attack in benghazi, libya. roberta gonzales is here. and in you like rain, you'll like -- and if you like rain, you'll like her forecast. >> i was taking a look at the long-range computer models, and from now, all the way to january 8, we will be seeing more rain than sunshine. good evening, everybody. let's take a look at our live hi-def doppler radar. let's go ahead and take a look. i want to zero in on some of that precipitation. let's start off right there. some of this rain has now moved out of martinez but this is a very light precipitation, measured up to about a quarter of an inch totally today in parts of the north bay. we still have another little line of showers drifting through highway 116 anywhere towards sonoma, moving in the direction of glen allen. but for the most part, this cold front is out of here. and i thought we'd take a look at our interesting precipitation of normal stats. where we stand today in comparison to last year at this

time. san francisco now, 138% of normal. check out that very hefty total in santa rosa, a healthy number in san jose, 121% of normal, when last year we were only at 41%. tonight we will see these temperatures very similar to what we saw in day time highs. 48 in san francisco. it was 47 in concord, actually dipping down into the 30's there. otherwise, 47 in san francisco. it's currently 48 there. 42 in downtown san jose for an overnight low. there's a chill in the air because it's so damp outside. we will see mostly cloudy skies tomorrow. a stray shower certainly possible. more rain than sunshine in the forecast because take a look at these systems here. this is the next one. upstream. behind it, we have more little impulses. they're cold fronts. they originate out of the gulf of alaska so there's a lot of cold air associated with them.

here's our sunday. a smattering of a shower here or there. we'll keep the snow level down to 2,000 feet. and then here comes your monday morning commute. yes. a very sloppy start to a brand- new workweek. once that moves out by the afternoon hours, upstream again, another system for your tuesday. this is how we're going to play out our sunday forecast. cloud cover in the midsection. 39 degrees. a lake wind advisory in effect for the high sierra and let it snow all the way through mid- week. daytime highs will be in the 50's everywhere, also 50's to the north. the extended forecast, each and every day, in and out of the rain. the dry day will be on wednesday. then there's a chance of a little bit of dry on saturday before more rain moves in on sunday. >> you only see a peek of sunshine. >> but we'll be dry on
